Passion and love for the culinary arts came at an early age for Scott Pohorelic. He began washing dishes at age sixteen but was running his own kitchen by age nineteen. After many years of hands on experience, and recognizing the need to further his formal education, Scott completed the esteemed culinary program at SAIT in Calgary. In the next step of his career, Scott found his way to the highly regarded River Café as Sous-Chef in 1999. Five years later Scott took over the reins as Chef. In this role, Scott helped foster River Café’s pioneering approach to regional cuisine. In 2010 Scott returned to SAIT, this time as Culinary Instructor, where he inspires and mentors students into realizing the value of seeking out the best ingredients from ethically responsible sources.
Scott is an ardent supporter of quality ingredients from small-scale farming and has built lasting relationships with many of Alberta’s local growers. Scott champions supporting organics, sustainability, biodiversity and wild indigenous ingredients.
Scott represented Alberta in 2006 at the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival in Washington DC and in 2008 at the first bi-annual Canadian Chef’s Congress at Eigensinn Farm. Scott was featured on The Discovery Channel’s series Chef’s Domain Chef’s in 2008. Scott has been forefront in the crusade to expand and promote Alberta cuisine.
